The difference between a sleepy kid and a calm one

A wired body and a racing mind can keep them up, even on melatonin. Here's what helps them settle.

5 things to know about melatonin ↓

Why they can be yawning and still bouncing off the bed

A melatonin gummy makes them sleepy. It doesn't make them calm.

Telling the body it's night is all melatonin does. It can't slow a body that's still running, or quiet a head that's still going.

So you get a kid who's tired and wired at the same time.

Sleepy isn't the same as calm.

Left: a kid yawning but still kicking, head full of the day. Right: the same kid calm and asleep.

It's sugar on their teeth all night, right after you brushed

You brush their teeth. Then they chew a sweet, sticky gummy.

The sugar can sit on their teeth all night.

The dose on the label often isn't the dose inside

Researchers tested 25 melatonin gummies sold in the US.1

22 of 25 melatonin gummies were more than 10% off their label. One had 347% of the melatonin on the label. Lab test of 25 products, JAMA 2023.
Lab test of 25 melatonin gummy products. JAMA, 2023.

One had 74% of what the label said. Another had 347%.

So even half a gummy “to be safe” might not be the dose you think.

It was meant for a bad week, not every night

The American Academy of Pediatrics says melatonin is for short-term use.2

But bedtime without it can feel impossible. So one gummy for a rough week turns into one gummy, every night.

One a night is 365 a year.

One for a bad week.
Then every night.

It's a hormone, not a vitamin

Their body already makes it. Every night, about two hours before bed, on its own.3

In young adults, as little as 0.1 to 0.3 mg is enough to reach night-time levels.1

A gummy taken as directed can give a kid 40 to 130 times the amount that's enough for a young adult.1

In the US, it sits on the shelf next to the vitamins.4 In the UK, it's prescription only.5

The same melatonin jar out on an open shelf next to the vitamins, and locked behind a pharmacy counter with a Prescription tag

Bedtime has two jobs. The gummy only does one.

A kid curled up on his side in bed at 9:00, hand under his cheek, eyes half closed, the gummy baffled on the nightstand

So when they're still up at 9, it usually isn't missing melatonin.

Sleepy is the job the gummy does.

Calm is the one it leaves to you: a body that lets go and a head that goes quiet.

“What I recommend instead is supporting the sleep machinery that your child's brain already has.”

Will my kid take it?

As with our other products, our nightly essentials is sweetened without sugar. Rather our tablet includes a blend of monk fruit extract — a superfruit that is sweeter than sugar for a taste kids love, and mannitol — a sweetener also found in pumpkins and strawberries.
