You might have noticed the term “RDA” on nutrition labels or health-related products and wondered, “What’s that all about?” In short, the RDA is a guideline that helps us understand how much of each vitamin or mineral we need to stay healthy. In this article, we’ll explore what the RDA is, the history behind it, and discuss why it matters for your nutrition.

What is the RDA?

RDA stands for Recommended Dietary Allowances and represents the average daily intake of a nutrient that is sufficient to meet the needs of 97–98% of healthy individuals. RDAs are used to plan balanced daily diets for people of all ages. Because nutrient requirements differ based on age and sex, the recommended amount of a nutrient will vary. For example, the iron needs for a 9-month-old baby girl are different from those of a 42-year-old man. 

The backstory

The first RDAs were first established in 1943 during World War II with the goal of “providing standards to serve as a goal for good nutrition” and addressing “nutrition problems in connection with national defense.” Since then, the RDAs have been regularly updated, with the current version being the tenth edition, released in 1989. Over time, the RDAs have been used for a variety of important purposes, including:

  • Planning and obtaining food supplies for specific population groups

  • Interpreting food consumption data for individuals and populations

  • Setting standards for food assistance programs

  • Assessing the adequacy of national food supplies in meeting nutritional needs

  • Designing nutrition education programs

  • Developing new food products

  • Establishing guidelines for nutrition labeling on food products

The RDA is part of a larger framework called the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). DRIs are a  collection of nutrient intake values designed to address different aspects of nutritional adequacy, including: 

  • Estimated Average Requirements (EAR): Average daily level of nutrient intake to meet the requirements of 50% of healthy people. 

  • Adequate Intakes (AI): Intake that ensures nutritional adequacy.

  • Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL): Maximum daily nutrient intake that’s unlikely to cause adverse health effects.

When there isn’t enough information to set an RDA, an Adequate Intake (AI) level is used instead. Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs) are used to indicate the maximum safe nutrient intake.

Establishing RDAs

Since 1974, RDA committees have outlined the ideal process for determining nutrient allowances. A nutrient requirement is the minimum intake needed to maintain normal function and health. For children, it’s the amount that’s needed for healthy growth and development, and for adults, it’s the amount needed to maintain a healthy body weight and prevent nutrient depletion. 

For any given nutrient, the process involves:

  • Observed nutrient intakes in healthy individuals

  • Epidemiological data showing that nutrient deficiency can be corrected with dietary changes

  • Studies linking nutrient status to intake 

  • Studies in which low or deficient nutrient levels are corrected through nutrient restoration

  • Animal studies with findings that can be reliably extrapolated to humans

  • Biochemical assessments of tissue saturation or molecular function in relation to nutrient intake.

Why is the RDA important?

The RDA is important because it gives evidence-based guidance on how much of each nutrient most healthy people should eat every day to maintain health. Here’s why it matters today:

  • It can prevent deficiencies: RDAs guide people on the amount of each nutrient they need to eat to avoid deficiencies that can cause health issues or uncomfortable symptoms. For example, low iron levels are linked to fatigue, lightheadedness, and pale skin. 

  • Supports overall health: Adequate nutrient intake supports healthy growth (strong bones), immune function, metabolic health, cognition, and prevents chronic diseases.

  • Guides public health policy: RDAs inform school lunch programs, food fortification, food security initiatives, and nutrition equity, especially for vulnerable populations.

  • Helps individuals plan diets: Dietitians and doctors use RDAs to plan healthy diets for people of all nutritional needs, ages, and life stages like pregnancy and lactation.

  • Informed food labels: RDAs help set the Daily Values (DVs) you see on food nutrition labels, which show how much a serving of food contributes to your recommended daily intake of each nutrient.
