Bedtime without sugar or melatonin

That gummy can leave sugar on their teeth all night, every night. Here's what helps them settle without it.

5 things to know about gummies ↓
A kid asleep, the Hiya jar on the nightstand
1 of 5

It's sugar on their teeth all night, right after you brushed

You brush their teeth. Then they chew a sweet, sticky gummy.

The sugar can sit on their teeth all night.

One a night is 365 gummies a year.

A hormone, in candy form

Their body already makes it. Every night, about two hours before bed, on its own.1

In young adults, as little as 0.1 to 0.3 mg is enough to reach night-time levels.2

A gummy taken as directed can give a kid 40 to 130 times the amount that's enough for a young adult.2

In the US, it sits on the shelf next to the vitamins.3 In the UK, it's prescription only.4

The dose on the label often isn't the dose inside

Researchers tested 25 melatonin gummies sold in the US.2

22 of 25 melatonin gummies were more than 10% off their label. One had 347% of the melatonin on the label. Lab test of 25 products, JAMA 2023.
Lab test of 25 melatonin gummy products. JAMA, 2023.

One had 74% of what the label said. Another had 347%.

So even half a gummy “to be safe” might not be the dose you think.

It was meant for a bad week, not every night

The American Academy of Pediatrics says melatonin is for short-term use.5

But bedtime without it can feel impossible.
So parents keep reaching for it.

One for a bad week.
Then every night.

And sleepy isn't the same as calm

A melatonin gummy makes them sleepy. It doesn't make them calm.

So some kids get knocked out without ever winding down. Others lie there tired, with a body still running and a head still busy.

Bedtime has two jobs.
The gummy only does one.

A kid yawning with heavy eyes but still bouncing at 9:00, the gummy smug on the nightstand

So what does the other job?

“What I recommend instead is supporting the sleep machinery that your child's brain already has.”
Dr. Phil BoucherDr. Phil BoucherBoard-certified Pediatrician · Hiya advisor

So your kid doesn't need more melatonin, or more sugar, to wind down.

They need to feel calm before lights out.

Calm is a body that lets go and a head that goes quiet.

As with our other products, our nightly essentials is sweetened without sugar. Rather our tablet includes a blend of monk fruit extract — a superfruit that is sweeter than sugar for a taste kids love, and mannitol — a sweetener also found in pumpkins and strawberries.
